…Building a movement away from toxic social media platforms, towards alternative open social media…

Digital independence day launched

“Digital Independence Day” is a new initiative launched in Germany in December 2025, with website di.day. It was launched at the 39th Chaos Communication Congress, of the German hacker group Chaos Computer Club, by author Marc-Uwe Kling, and is a collaborative project of many organizations, coordinated by Save Social.

The DI website declares: “Our digital lives are in the hands of a few super-rich individuals. With their (quasi-)monopoly position, companies like X, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, Spotify, ByteDance (TikTok) and people like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, or Mark Zuckerberg determine worldwide how we inform ourselves online, how we discuss, communicate, or act. No person and no company should possess such uncontrolled influence. The good news: We are currently giving Big Tech this power, and we can also take it away from Big Tech again.”

“Every first Sunday of the month. We are taking back our free digital lives, stopping the further destruction of democracy, and switching to democracy-friendly digital alternatives.”

Around 16,000 people are attending the 39th annual Chaos Communication Congress in Hamburg 27–30 December 2025.

Digital Independence Day Gatherings will take place throughout Germany on the first Sunday of every month, starting 4th January 2026, where “…we take a step together towards the better side of the internet. We show that alternatives work, and we encourage you to bring your friends and acquaintances along.” Are you in Germany? Events are listed here.
